Why the Student Developer Pack Is a Goldmine

Every KNUST student has access to a @st.knust.edu.gh email — and that one email unlocks 100+ paid developer tools worth thousands of dollars, completely free. The most valuable is GitHub Copilot (normally $10/month) which acts as an AI pair programmer. This lesson walks you through the whole process, including the email-verification step where most students get stuck.

This lesson is organized into 3 tiers so you only pay for the depth you need:

⚡ BasicCore guide: apply, verify & install

What's in the Student Developer Pack?

The GitHub Student Developer Pack gives students free access to 100+ developer tools and services, including:

  • GitHub Copilot — AI pair programmer (normally $10/month)
  • Azure DevOps — CI/CD and project management
  • DigitalOcean — $200 in cloud credits
  • Namecheap — Free .me domain for 1 year
  • JetBrains — Free IDE licenses (IntelliJ, PyCharm, etc.)
  • Many more...

What these tools actually let you do, in plain terms:

  • Copilot writes and explains code as you type — the closest thing to a personal TA for programming.
  • Azure DevOps / GitHub Actions run your code automatically on every commit (CI/CD) — a skill that makes CVs stand out.
  • DigitalOcean lets you rent a cloud server and deploy your own apps — no more localhost-only projects.
  • Namecheap gives you a real domain so your portfolio looks professional.
  • JetBrains unlocks pro IDEs like PyCharm and IntelliJ — deeper tools than a plain text editor.

Navigating the Pack Dashboard

Your dashboard at education.github.com/pack is the control centre for everything:

  • "Your benefits" tab — every offer with a View button. Clicking it walks you through claiming that benefit.
  • Status badge — shows "Student verified" plus the exact expiry date of your pack.
  • Renewal notice — GitHub posts a renewal banner here about a month before expiry; this is also where you re-verify.
  • Offers you've claimed — GitHub tracks which benefits you've started, so you can spot ones you skipped.
💡 Tip: Bookmark education.github.com/pack and check it once a month — offers are added and removed over time, and a fresh offer could save you money mid-semester.

Step-by-Step: Apply for the Pack

  1. Visit education.github.com/pack
  2. Sign up or sign in to GitHub
  3. Click "Get Student Developer Pack"
  4. Add your school email: username@st.knust.edu.gh
  5. Verify your email (see detailed steps below)
  6. Enter school name: "Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology"
  7. Answer usage questions about how you plan to use the tools
  8. Upload proof if requested (student ID or admission letter)
  9. Submit — approval usually takes 1-5 business days

Email Verification: The Critical Step

This is where most KNUST students get stuck. Here's the exact process:

Step A: Add Email to GitHub

  1. Log in to GitHub → click your avatar → Settings → Emails
  2. Under "Add email address", enter username@st.knust.edu.gh
  3. Click "Add"
  4. Click "Resend verification email" next to that address

Step B: Check KNUST Outlook

  1. Go to outlook.office.com
  2. Log in with username@st.knust.edu.gh and your KNUST password
  3. Check your Inbox, Spam/Junk, and any filters
  4. Open the email from noreply@github.com
  5. Click the "Verify email" link

On your phone, the Outlook app is fine too — the verification link opens in your browser and takes you straight back to GitHub, already signed in. If the link opens but shows an error page, copy the whole URL and paste it into a fresh browser tab instead of tapping it again.

💡 Tip: If the verification email doesn't arrive within 5 minutes, click "Resend verification email" on GitHub again. Also check that your KNUST mailbox can receive external emails.

While You Wait for Approval (Days 1–5)

Approval takes 1–5 business days. Use the wait productively so you're ready the moment the badge appears:

  1. Install VS Code from code.visualstudio.com and set up the Copilot extension — you'll sign in the moment approval lands.
  2. Create your GitHub profile — upload a photo, write a one-line bio, and set your location to Kumasi, Ghana.
  3. Practise Git basics — create a test repo, commit, and push a README so your first Copilot session has a project to work in.
  4. Bookmark the Pack dashboard and decide which benefits you'll claim first using the 30-day plan above.
💡 Tip: Approval emails come from GitHub, not from KNUST — check your Gmail/Inbox on the address you registered with, and log into GitHub occasionally to see the green "Student verified" badge appear on your profile.

After Approval: Install Copilot

In VS Code:

  1. Install VS Code from code.visualstudio.com
  2. Install the GitHub Copilot extension
  3. Sign in with your GitHub account
  4. Start coding — Copilot suggests completions as you type

In Terminal (Copilot CLI):

winget install GitHub.Copilot
mkdir TerminalProjects
cd TerminalProjects
copilot

Type copilot in any project folder to start an interactive AI session right in your terminal.

Tip: Copilot in VS Code and Copilot CLI share the same subscription, so activating one doesn't cost extra — use the GUI editor for heavy work and the CLI for quick terminal tasks.

And remember: this is a student perk — never sell, share, or resell your pack benefits. GitHub actively monitors abuse and revoked access hurts everyone.

Your 30-Day Starter Plan

Don't try to claim everything at once — follow this order so each benefit builds on the last:

  1. Day 1: Confirm your pack is approved (badge on your GitHub dashboard).
  2. Day 2: Install Copilot in VS Code and use it for one real assignment.
  3. Day 5: Claim GitHub Pro and create your first private class-project repo.
  4. Day 8: Claim JetBrains and open a PyCharm educational project.
  5. Day 12: Claim DigitalOcean credits and deploy a simple website or API to learn cloud basics.
  6. Day 15: Claim Namecheap and register a .me domain for your portfolio.
  7. Day 20: Explore the remaining offers — only claim what you'll actually use this semester.
  8. Day 30: Set the renewal reminder so nothing lapses.
💡 Tip: Claiming everything at once is tempting but wasteful — most offers have a 1-year window. Claim them as you need them so they're fresh when your skill level matches.
💡 Tip: Your Copilot license is tied to your GitHub account, not your computer — sign in on any device (VS Code, JetBrains, CLI) and it just works.

💡 Tip: Almost every benefit must be claimed individually from the Pack dashboard — approval alone doesn't activate them. Open education.github.com/pack and click "View" on each offer.

Claiming Walkthrough: The Three Most-Used Benefits

GitHub Copilot

  1. In VS Code, install the GitHub Copilot extension.
  2. Click the Copilot icon in the status bar → Sign in to GitHub → authorise in your browser.
  3. Verify it's active: the status-bar icon turns green and suggestions appear as you type.
  4. Open a project folder (code .) and try a comment → Tab to accept the suggestion.

DigitalOcean ($200 credits)

  1. Open the Pack dashboard and click "View" on the DigitalOcean offer.
  2. Click through to DigitalOcean and create a new account (the credits require a new account, not an existing one).
  3. Add a payment method — DigitalOcean keeps it on file but the $200 credit is applied automatically.
  4. Create a $12/month droplet to host your first site; the credits cover about 16 months of practice.

Namecheap (.me domain)

  1. Open the Namecheap offer in the Pack dashboard and click "View".
  2. Create a Namecheap account using the same email as your GitHub account.
  3. Search for your desired .me name in the promo page's search box.
  4. Add it to cart — the free-year coupon applies automatically at checkout.
💡 Tip: Use your firstname-lastname or a skills-based name (e.g. kwamebuilds.me) for your portfolio domain. You can host your GitHub Pages site on it later — a very professional look for applications.

Verification Edge Cases (The Ones That Trap Students)

  • You don't know your KNUST email address — your username is usually your student ID (e.g. 20123456@st.knust.edu.gh). If unsure, check the KNUST student portal or your admission letter.
  • Forgotten KNUST password — reset it at apps.knust.edu.gh/students/Account/ForgotPassword before trying anything else.
  • GitHub asks for proof instead of email verification — some accounts get the "document upload" route. Scan your student ID or admission letter as a PDF/JPG and upload it; approval then takes 1–5 business days.
  • You already have a personal GitHub account — don't create a new one. Just add the KNUST email to your existing account and apply with it.
  • Application rejected — reapply with proof of enrollment (student ID, admission letter).

Keeping Your Pack Active

GitHub re-verifies student status every 12 months. A month before expiry, GitHub emails you. To stay covered:

  1. Log in and confirm you're still a student.
  2. If your enrolment email has changed (e.g. new student ID), update it first in Settings → Emails.
  3. Re-upload proof if requested.

Graduating? Enjoy the pack until it naturally expires — and export any important repos or licenses you've grown attached to before then.

💡 Tip: Copilot stops working on the day your pack expires. Set a calendar reminder for the expiry date shown on your Pack dashboard so you never lose it mid-semester.

Common Mistakes (and How to Avoid Them)

  • Applying with a Gmail address — the pack requires a school email or official proof. Use your @st.knust.edu.gh address.
  • Checking only the Inbox — GitHub's email often lands in Junk. Check Spam/Junk and your Focused/Other tabs in Outlook.
  • Not claiming the benefits — approval ≠ activation. Claim each offer from the dashboard.
  • Ignoring the renewal — lose the pack, lose Copilot mid-project. Track the expiry.
  • Sharing your GitHub login — never share accounts or tokens; a shared account can lose its student status and ban risks.

The single biggest cause of lost benefits is silence — the renewal email lands in a folder you never check. Add GitHub's email (noreply@github.com) to your contacts so its messages never get filtered out again.

git config --global init.defaultBranch main
git config --global pull.rebase false

Template 3: First Commit on a Class Project

mkdir my-project && cd my-project
git init
echo "# My Project" > README.md
git add .
git commit -m "Initial commit"
git branch -M main
git remote add origin https://github.com/USERNAME/my-project.git
git push -u origin main

Template 4: GitHub CLI + Copilot Auth From the Terminal

# Install the official GitHub CLI (Windows: winget install GitHub.cli)
gh auth login
gh repo create my-project --public --source . --push
# Then verify your student Copilot works from the terminal:
gh auth status
copilot auth status

Recommended Copilot Usage Patterns

  • Inline completion for boilerplate — let Copilot write imports, loops, and repetitive code; review every line.
  • Chat for explanations — select a function and ask "what does this do and where could it break?"
  • Agent mode for whole tasks — "write a unit test for this class" and let it create the file, then review the diff.
  • Tests before refactors — ask Copilot to write tests first, then refactor; the green run proves nothing broke.
💡 Tip: Copilot learns from your open files. Keep a clean README.md and well-named files in your project, and its suggestions get noticeably better.

Troubleshooting FAQ

  • Email not arriving? — Contact KNUST IT/ICT to unblock messages from github.com
  • Mailbox not working? — Visit UITS at Casely Hayford Block or submit a ticket at helpdesk.knust.edu.gh
  • Application rejected? — Reapply with proof of enrollment (student ID, admission letter)
  • Need password reset? — Visit apps.knust.edu.gh/students/Account/ForgotPassword
  • Copilot stopped suggesting? — Check your pack's expiry date first, then sign out/in of the extension and reload VS Code.
  • Verification email keeps bouncing? — Confirm the exact username in your address (student ID vs name-based) from the KNUST portal, then resend.
  • DigitalOcean says the coupon is invalid? — You must use a brand-new account linked from the Pack dashboard's "View" link. Existing accounts don't qualify.
  • JetBrains license not showing? — After claiming, sign out of your JetBrains account in the IDE and sign back in; the student license then appears under your account.
  • Can I use the pack after graduation? — No — the pack is for current students only and expires when you graduate. Until then, it renews yearly while you remain enrolled.
